Artificial Intelligence and facial recognition: new EU provisions for the protection of privacy.

Although it is an increasingly widespread terminology, not everyone knows its meaning in practical terms.

Most of the time, artificial intelligence is identified with the futuristic idea of  sentient machines and with an awareness of themselves, capable of performing actions and choices independently, just like a human.
However, this is a long-term vision linked to the concept of technological singularity, which to date is not known if and when it will be achieved.
Today, however, artificial intelligence is already among us in a much simpler form, capable of supporting hardware and software, machines and technologies, with new features, such as the space-temporal perception, the ability to make choices and interact with humans, which allow hitherto unknown applications.

Artificial intelligence and facial recognition.

If at the beginning of AI there were doubts about the possibilities of its use in daily life, now that it has become part of it, ethical and moral problems have arisen regarding the use of artificial intelligence used for facial recognition.

The Clearview AI scandal.

What is Clearview AI?
A platform created by Hoan Ton-That that collects photographs of faces from Facebook; YouTube and other websites to give law enforcement agencies, in this case American, the opportunity to upload an image and thus trace the name of the person sought, guilty of crime.
This possibility has sparked several debates on the subject of privacy and mass surveillance: the European Commission has thus envisaged a suspension on the use of technologies for facial recognition outside the sphere of public safety, which will last from 3 to 5 years. This provision is intended to allow the creation of ad hoc legislation, designed precisely to be able to regulate this instrument without compromising privacy rights and individual freedoms.

But what does SizeYou have to do with all this?

The app is able to collect anthropometric measurements from two simple clicks (back and side).
Our App uses Artificial Intelligence for the collection of anthropometric measurements. To date, in fact, we use a neural network that supports the main algorithm to ensure greater accuracy of the measurements collected.
Regardless of the main algorithm, the neural network is able to estimate the position of the fundamental points on the body for the extraction of the measurements starting from the results of a pose estimator, or a second neural network that recognizes the pose of the human body present in the photography. The efficiency of the application can therefore be improved by comparing the results of the main algorithm and neural network, generated independently.
The neural networks used are not able to perform facial recognition because the face is never framed by the app: the images are collected from the side and in profile, applying the principle of "privacy by design". The data is collected in total anonymity, with a process created by i-Deal and protected by patent and copyright, which allows you to take advantage of AI in a safe and respectful way from the privacy of users.
